Hyperhidrosis, also referred to as excessive sweating, affects 1% of the population and is caused by an over activity of the eccrine glands, which is one of the sweat glands found all over the body. They are mainly concentrated on the palms of hands, soles of feet and in the armpits. The most common trigger factors that may induce excessive sweating are exercise, heat, alcohol, tea or coffee, smoking, hot or spicy food, stress, or strong emotions. These trigger factors affect everyone but for Hyperhidrosis patient suffers this can make their day unbearable.
Vistabel is one of the treatments available for the successful treatment of excessive sweating. The most common areas to be treated are the armpits (axilla), hands and feet, and occasionally excessive perspiration on the face may be subdued.
After a full consultation including your medical history and an iodine test patch you may proceed with the treatment if suitable. A small amount of Vistabel (Botulinum Toxin A) is injected into the area that produces most sweat i.e. in the axilla region the Vistabel will be placed in the middle of the armpit. The Vistabel then causes the eccrine glands to gradually reduce its production of sweat. This may take slowly over a period of 2 weeks as the normal mechanism is temporarily blocked. If you are still producing some perspiration then it is possible to repeat the process again after the two weeks.
This treatment may last up to 6-7 months depending upon each individual. If you do wish to have this treatment then many people will have it done to combat the summer months, and treatment is generally required twice a year. However the majority of Hyperhidrosis suffers manage with the treatment only once a year.
We do advise that female clients try to avoid pregnancy in the first few months following Hyperhidrosis treatments.
Is Vistabel the only treatment for hyperhidrosis? As well as Vistabel, for treating excessive or unwanted sweating, we also have a treatment called Miradry which may be a suitable alternative, or a treatment worth evaluation also.
